Pulling out all the stops to make South Africans fitter and more productive

The only exercise many people get from their gym contract comes from carrying their membership cards around. But this could soon change as Reebok Education is pulling out all the stops to get people to stick to their exercise regimes – and thus become healthier and more productive workers.

"With summer approaching, thousands of South Africans are beginning to look at their tummies despairingly, wishing for some divine inspiration to help drive them to their nearest gym," comments Bridget Vosloo, managing director of Reebok Education. " For those individuals who actually brave the trip and sign up what usually follows is a two to three month period of tireless devotion to a rigorous exercise regime. Unfortunately as time goes on most people lose focus."

Recently Reebok Education - part of the world renowned Reebok sports brand -conducted a survey amongst thousands of women to discover what percentage lose interest in their exercise routines and what exactly causes interest to dwindle. The results were staggering and displayed that as many as 64% of women made fitness based resolutions but within 2 months 60% of these had given up on them. After one year, only a meagre 4% of the women surveyed were managing to stick to their fitness resolutions.

When asked why, most women responded that they viewed exercise as a chore and stated that they would be far more open to exercise if it were made fun and engaging. The findings of the survey are not restricted to women alone, but rather apply to the population as a whole.
In view of these statistics, Reebok Education is aiming to expose the South African public to some of the latest cutting edge fitness programmes and help put the fun back into exercise.

"The combination of Reebok's heritage in women's fitness and the fun, excitement and innovation that Cirque du Soleil brings to their craft, means that we are in a unique position to provide a solution to this need," says Vosloo.

"We have pioneered new innovative and fun exercise programmes for several years, but unfortunately many individuals including fitness professionals are unaware of what is on offer. In recent studies it has also been noted that obesity is on the rise in South Africa and we feel we have somewhat of a social responsibility to make exercise more appealing and do our part to create a healthier, fitter and happier population."

To address these issues, Reebok Education is holding a fitness convention at the Village Walk Planet Fitness in Sandton between September 1 and 4 September. "The convention is geared towards all shapes and sizes and its primary aim is to break the boredom and introduce the public to new and exciting workout programmes, Vosloo elaborates.

"We want people to realize that they don't have to spend hours sitting on an exercise bike or running on a treadmill to get fit. There are a enormous variety of exercise programmes available and people should have the opportunity to sample them to find the exercise regime that fits them best".

As supporters of healthy living in and amongst the youth of South Africa, Boston City Campus and Business College will also be participating in the Reebok Fitness Convention. "When we heard about the convention we knew we had to get involved," says Yaron Gutkin of Boston City Campus.."We believe a healthy mind is linked to a healthy body and boast our own sports faculty where we offer courses for those aspiring to work in sport. We hope the convention will reach many with its message about the benefits of healthy living and about career opportunities in the fitness industry".
