Franceso Coda is head of digital marketing department at Boston City Campus and Business College. Workplace asked him about his job.
What do you do?
I am responsible for the maintenance and development of the Boston website www.boston.co.za and the newly launched www.rightstart.mobi as well as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Also, my function is to grow paid internet advertising and mobile communication, such as MXit.
Describe a typical day.
My first task is to respond to e-mails check the various social networks and answer information requests. I also encourage students to visit the Boston mobi and website for free downloads and advice. Then it’s on to updating information on the website. A good portion of the afternoon is spent browsing the net and various websites for latest trends and updates, which can sometimes change hourly. On the creative side, I enjoy doing graphics and designing for Boston.
Why did you choose this career?
When I was 14, a friend and I started Vibes Unlimited Mobile Disco, a small mobile disco that has become very popular. I soon realized that I enjoyed interacting with people and was enthused by the thrill of finding new ways to promote our services. The marketing bug had bitten. Working in marketing is an extension of what I have always been passionate about.
What qualifications are necessary?
These days jobs are scarce, so it’s important to get the best qualifications they can. I studied a Unisa degree through Boston City Campus and Business College for a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management. These provided a solid foundation of different elements within the marketing and management space. However, workplace experience is essential. It might not come with massive salary initially, but the long term benefits, combined with a solid qualification are priceless.
What role does a social medium play in the Boston marketing mix?
We are living in an age where digital communication is king. At Boston, we have always believed in creating strong brand awareness through traditional mediums such as press, radio and television. In order to stay on top of the game, we are heavily involved in online and digital marketing. Social media will continue to play an integral role in our 2011 campaign.
What has contributed to your success?
My bosses at Boston have been fantastic in allowing me to investigate and explore different opportunities. I’ve learnt so much. Anything less than perfection is unacceptable to me.
What have been the highlights in your career so far?
Every campaign has been a highlight for me. It’s a great feeling when a campaign comes together and there is an immediate call to action. Even better than that is seeing the return on investment.
