An exciting job that offers diverse challenges...

What does your job entails?

I am a junior accounts executive at Marcus Brewster Publicity. My job description is quite diverse; it ranges from managing media relations for my clients to event management.  It is also my duty to ensure that my clients are kept up to date on the latest trends happening in the marketplace.

We use this information to determine the impact on their business. I also conduct media analysis which measures the results of the various publicity campaigns we manage on their behalf.

Describe a typical day?

The reason why I love my job so much is because each day is different. I never know what to expect when I enter the front door in the morning. For example, just recently I was briefed on a major event for a major client, who wanted 300 celebrity and media guests to attend the launch of a new product. I needed to pull this together within a space of two days. And the most amazing thing was that I did indeed pull it off – and only having been in the industry for a year, this was a great personal achievement for me.

What are your biggest challenges?

I live by the motto that in life there is no challenge big enough to overwhelm me. There are, of course, the pressures of the industry like developing media relationships and getting constant flow of coverage for clients.

And the biggest rewards?

Client satisfaction is my biggest reward – and seeing my boss’s happy face, of course.

What does one need to succeed in your career?

Willpower, passion, tenacity, commitment and a bubbly personality. Just a short story on how important a bubbly personality is: a year ago when I was still in college, my boss phoned me to arrange an interview. She told me that she already knew just from our telephone conversation that that I was going to do well in the industry. She said I had personality – enough personality to get me that internship.

What is your background?

I come from a small town in Kwa-Zulu Natal called Vryheid. I come from a small family of two sisters, two nephews and a wonderful hardworking mom. I attended boarding school all my life, and came to Joburg to study at University. I actually intended to study advertising, but was exposed to so many courses at Boston Media House that I ended up majoring in public relations and video production. I am 22 years of age and I can happily say that I am satisfied with what I have achieved thus far. I have always believe that nothing is ever too much, just as long as you dedicated yourself to it completely
